ALT Chapter 3.2 Return Home

There has been no prince in the palace for a long time, so it is not necessary to give lectures to the prince. Instead, he gave lectures to the Emperor. It can be said that ‘although there is no title as the Emperor's teacher, there is the truth as the Emperor's teacher’.

Recently, when the weather in autumn turned colder, Shen Lang began to feel that his dragon body has gradually become unwell. The three cabinet ministers were even secretly called into the palace several times.

No one knows exactly what was discussed.

But since last month, Shen Lang has sent a decree to summon some of the imperial clansman’s children into the palace to listen to the lectures in the imperial lecture hall with him. This also includes several of his brothers, and Shen Jie is no exception either.

By the time Yan Lin and Shen Jie arrived in front of the Wenhua hall, the daily lectures had been going on for a while.

When Huang De, the chief eunuch who was guarding at the door, saw them coming, he immediately hurried over and bent his body while whispering in a low voice: "His Royal Highness and the Young Marquis came so late today. The lectures had been going for a while and if you two entered at this time, you will definitely be seen by the Young Teacher!"

When they were having a good time last night drinking, how can they still remember that they have to listen to the lecture today?

Shen Jie and Yan Lin looked at each other and felt their head aches.

This teacher, Xie Wei, has always been both lenient and strict. Humanity is ‘the legacy of ancient sage’, but the principle and bottom line is strictly clear and tolerates no mistakes or violations.

Last time, when King Yanping, who was quite loved by the Emperor, was only half a minute late but didn't dare to make any fuss. He just slipped in from the side door of the hall. Who knows that it was directly seen by Xie Wei and he was asked to recite his yesterday's teaching of ‘Faction Discussion[1]’ in the hall.

King Yanping was young and playful, so how can he recite it?

Only stood there, faltered for a long time and made a big blushing face.

Xie Wei did not get angry either and asked him to go back and sit down instead. He said that yesterday it may be that his speech is too complicated to remember, and took the blame on himself.

After King Yanping sat down, he felt really ashamed.

On the same day, he went back to his own house and lit up the lantern to study till night. The next day, he arrived at Wenhua hall not even half a minute late. He not only recited ‘Faction Discussion’, but also recited ‘Ten Recommendations to Emperor Taizong of Tang’, which impressed everyone so much.

From then on, he kept working hard.

No matter how shameful King Yanping was, he was only 14 years old. He could also argue that he was a child and didn't understand it.

But Yan Lin and Shen Jie are not young anymore, so they care about their face[2].

At this moment, looking at the door of the Wenhua hall and listening to the faint lecture sound from inside, they felt their scalp numbed[3] and a little fearful.

In the end, it was still Huang De who was more savvy. He thought about it for a while and gave an idea: "Whenever something happens, Young Teacher would always deal with it on the spot. But once the time has passed, he will not pursue it anymore, and he will never turn the old accounts with anyone. Today, the Shangyi[4] bureau sent a Guqin[5]. The Emperor gave it to Young Teacher. A while later, there will be a tea break between two lectures. Young Teacher loves qin and he will definitely try it. It's better for Your Highness and Young Marquis to wait for a while, wait for Young Teacher to touch the qin before entering. Most probably, he will just let it go. "

Feeling as if they were suddenly saved, Shen Jie and Yan Lin quickly clasped their hands and saluted him: "Many thanks, Gong Gong[6]!"

After speaking, each quietly went to the side hall and waited in silent.

  *

Jiang Xuening also didn't know what the situation would be like when Yan Lin and Shen Jie went to the palace to listen to the lectures in the Imperial Lecture Hall.

After the two of them left, she soon embarked on the road to return home.

When she was young, she already went to almost all the streets in the Capital. When she just came out of the inn, she still felt a little unfamiliar and somewhat couldn’t find the right direction. Fortunately, after taking two steps, the old memory gradually revived, and she soon found the way back to the Jiang's Mansion.

[1] Faction Discussion: I don’t even know the correct literal translation. The raw is 朋党论. Any idea/suggestion is welcomed.

[2] Face: in Chinese it usually means honor, respect, prestige.

[3] Scalp numb: idiom for the feeling of extreme fear.

[4] Shangyi: Government office’s name. The literal translation is ‘greatly respected ceremony’.

[5] Guqin (sometimes called qin): a plucked seven-string Chinese musical instrument.

[6] Gong Gong: the old appellation for eunuch.

ALT Chapter 3.1 Return Home

        What a big talk.

However, Shen Jie calculated his age, in two more months he will have a capping ceremony. It was indeed time to talk about marriage.

He said with a smile, "This thought of yours, did the Marquis know about it?"

       "He knows."

Yan Lin, with the sword at his waist, turned his wrist and flung the whip casually. His bearing is natural and unrestrained.

The Ninth Layer Precinct of the Imperial Palace is just ahead.

He took off his sword first, and then said: "Father said that the Jiang Mansion is the successor family of poetry and literature, and now Jiang Daren is the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Revenue, and what he has in his palm is an actual official post with actual work. In the early years when His Majesty ascended the throne, he secretly sent Teacher Xie into the Capital, which could be regarded as having a long meritorious service, and he is also friends with Teacher Xie. She is the legitimate daughter of the Jiang family, and can still be forcefully regarded as a marriage of equal social rank with me. After my capping ceremonies in November is over, I will ask someone to come to their door to propose the marriage."

"You, kid, usually doesn't pay any attention to those sons of the rich in the Capital. The notable young ladies and fair maidens are flattering you, but you also did not pay even the slightest attention to them. This king thought that because you are still young, you don't know the matter about man and woman, and is one with a pure heart and few desires. Who would have thought that you have already calculated it all behind? One really can’t tell, huh!"

Shen Jie thought about it carefully, and then his senses slowly returned.

"Moreover, after I got drunk last night, I didn’t conduct myself impetuously. It's just that when I woke up this morning, I accidentally hung my hand over her shoulder and you already rushed to tell me her identity as a girl and also said that you would marry her yourself in the future. Yan Lin, isn’t that being too protective?"

As the saying goes, ‘a friend's wife shall not be coveted’. Yan Lin's previous remarks, in addition to reminding Shen Jie that Jiang Xuening is a girl and he should keep some distance from her in the future, it also clearly encircled Jiang Xuening into his possession and stamped her with his seal, so as to stop other people's mind to covet her even before they came up with any ideas.

The teenager's little thought was seen through by another person. It was rare for his handsome face to turn slightly red, but his voice is louder than before, as if he could cover up something by behaving like this: "What’s wrong with being protective? I'm willing to anyway!"

       Just so overbearing like this.

Shen Jie couldn't help but laughed when he heard this.

The two stopped in front of the Imperial Palace’s main gate.

Yan Lin handed over his sword, and together with Shen Jie, they passed the Huiji[1] Gate and went to the right towards the Wenhua Hall.

Shen Jie's royal brother, that is, the current Emperor Shen Lang, was enthroned four years ago.

In any dynasty, the year where the new Emperor ascended the throne, is an extremely dangerous one.

The year when Shen Lang ascended the throne was no exception either.

The late Emperor became muddled because of his illness. He punished Shen Lang by forbidding him from leaving the Palace, but somehow lost his mind and wanted to send him to the fief. For a moment, all the ministers under him were thrown into confusion. Fortunately, Xie Wei entered the capital. It could be said as truly roaring across the horizon. First, he stabilized Shen Lang's power in the Capital, and then he asked a famous doctor to cure the late Emperor's illness. Only then did the late Emperor issued an imperial edict to pass his throne down to the third prince, Shen Lang.

Xie Wei, whose alias name was Ju'an, was born in the prominent Xie clan in Jinling[2], which is the ‘Xie’ in the poem of ‘The old King Xie Tang who was once a feudal prince[3]’.

However, by the time of this dynasty, the Xie clan was already in decline.

At the age of 20, he became a successful candidate in the highest imperial examination and entered the Imperial Academy. But a short time later, a funeral report came from Jinling saying that Xie's mother had died of illness at home. Then, Xie Wei went back to Jinling to keep filial piety for his mother for three years.

Three years later, at the age of 23, he returned to the Capital in secret. Coincidentally, at a time where the right opportunity meets the right moment.

In just a short time, he turned the tide and helped Shen Lang to successfully ascend the throne. Together with monk Yuanji, he became the most trusted person of the new Emperor.

He has no actual official post, but he is named the Crown Prince's Young Tutor.

[1] Huiji: the litteral translation is ‘Pillar of Meeting’.

[2] Jinling: The name of China’s ancient city. Another name for Nanjing today.

[3] The old King Xie Tang who was once a feudal prince: The Chinese is 旧时王谢堂前燕 and I don’t know if that is the right translation. I searched for a long long long time on google but found I understand nothing, so just translate by combining the letter one by one plus instinct? You are welcomed to enlighten me in any error I made :)

ALT chapter 2.3 Yan Lin

The reason is very simple. First, Shen Jie has a very good temper. Second, the one he really likes is not her. Third, she doesn't like him either. She just likes that position, so other things can't affect her heart.

In the eyes of those who don't know about it, it can be said as ‘A husband and wife loved and respected each other for life, the Emperor and Empress are in harmony’?

However, it can be regarded as her being rude first, so Jiang Xuening looked at him a little bit apologetically: "It was I who offended and even personally hurt Gentleman Shen just now. I hope Gentleman Shen did not blame me. I will make amends to you one day."

It will be fake to say that one is not angry when one has been slapped for no reason at all.

Moreover, Yan Lin is still very overbearing.

But when Jiang Xuening said this, her voice was soft. Her eyes that were looking at him seemed as if they had been soaked in the spring water. She was a slim and fragile young man with the natural colour of her cheeks triumphed over the artificial effect of powder and paint, and rosy lips that were coupled with pretty white teeth. Maybe it was because she was still young, the contours of her face were still very soft and even the facial features are still delicate. It was a kind of beauty that could not be distinguished between male or female.

Shen Jie didn't know why but he couldn't get angry at all.

He never likes to make things difficult for others, so he just laughed and said: "Your slap is actually not that heavy too. But since you had said so, then I will not be polite anymore. I'll wait for Young Master Jiang to invite me to drink another day."

Yan Lin suddenly wants to exchange blows with him.

He put on a cold face, only gave a few words to Qing Feng before tidying up a little bit, and left the inn first with Shen Jie.

  *

On the way back to the palace, Shen Jie recalled all the various details in the inn before, and always felt that something was not right, especially when Yan Lin was defending Biao Young Master of the Jiang family by pulling a sword and pressing it on his neck.

On second thought, that boy is delicate, and has an outstanding look…

Shen Jie frowned slightly. He felt that his own senseless self, which was older than Yan Lin, has some words that shall be mentioned to him. He lifted the curtain of the carriage and said: "Well, Yan Lin, although some scholars in the capital right now are quite masculine and Biao Young Master of the Jiang family is indeed good-looking too, but you are the Shizi of Yongyi Marquis Mansion. You will get married in the future..."

Shen Jie was sitting in a horse carriage.

Yan Lin was riding a horse, parallel to the horse carriage.

The horse is outstanding, but the person on it is more outstanding.

But when he heard what was said, his face turned half black: "Your Highness, I don't like man."

This time it's Shen Jie's turn to look at him with suspicious eyes: "Then, the way you treat Biao Young Master of the Jiang family?"

"She[1] is not that whatever Biao Young Master of the Jiang family."

Yan Lin also remembered what had happened just now, especially Jiang Xuening’s gaze when she looked at Shen Jie before, which made him feel somewhat uncomfortable inside.

A few thoughts flashed through the bottom of that dark and deep eyes.

The thoughtful teenager suddenly said towards Shen Jie by his side: "She is the second girl of the Jiang family."

       "Pfft! Cough, cough cough... "

Shen Jie, who had just picked up a cup of tea inside the carriage and drank it, choked. He couldn't believe what he had heard!

  "You, you actually——"

But Yan Lin didn't think there was anything.

Sitting on the horseback, with a black robe that lined his stature all the more tall and straight.

At this moment, he only said: "She likes the bustling, and likes being unrestrained, so I just take her out to play. Your highness treats me like a brother and a friend. I told her identity today, so as to let Your Highness know that she is a girl. In the past, when Your Highness didn't know it, naturally couldn’t be blamed. From now on, You Highness already knows it. It’s better to pay more attention to the propriety, so as to avoid the disturbance like this morning's fright."

       Shen Jie nodded subconsciously.

Only after nodding his head, he realized that something was wrong: "Isn't it you who should pay more attention to propriety? If things got spread out, how can the girl get married?"

The teenager's dashing eyebrows and eyes slightly exposed its cutting edge. He only said with a smile: "I spoiled her, so I will marry her myself."

The author has something to say :

Xie Wei is a Grand Tutor, not an Imperial Preceptor. The last chapter was written at night, so I somewhat  write it muddlingly too.

In addition, girls get their hairpin ceremony at 15, and those with reputation, who love their daughters, will let their daughters stay until 20 years old before getting them married. Although this is a historical story, that kind of getting married at 15 or 16, I really can't write it.

[1] She and He, the pronunciation in Chinese is the same, the difference is only in the letter.

TN : Happy Chinese New Year for those who celebrate it.

ALT chapter 2.2 Yan Lin

Jiang Xuening had cold sweat on her forehead, and she hurriedly grabbed his arm: "No, no. There’s no such a thing! A misunderstanding. Blame me for having a nightmare just now, a nightmare. Just as I opened my eyes, I didn't grasp the situation yet and thought that Gentleman Shen was a bad man. I hit him in panic. Put down your sword quickly and be careful not to hurt anyone!”

  Yan Lin frowned: "Really?"

After hearing Jiang Xuening's remarks, Shen Jie said to himself secretly that he was really unlucky.

But after all, Young Master Jiang is a friend of Yan Lin. Although his status and standing differed greatly from him, can he make a fuss with the other party just because of this one slap?

  It's really not a gentleman’s demeanor.

It’s just that Yan Lin’s looks of disbelief really makes him doesn’t know whether to laugh or to cry: "Can you still doubt my moral standing? Not to mention that I have no intention of offending, even if I really had offended him, will you really cut my hand?"

He is the King of Linzi.

The descendant of a royal family.

But he did not expect that Yan Lin only quietly looked at him for a moment, neatly retracted the sword and returned it to its sheath, then said with an absolute and firm tone: "I will."

Shen Jie's eyelids twitched and he immediately raised his eyes to look at him.

Yan Lin had turned around to look at Jiang Xuening, and the cold voice was softened, as if years of ice and snow suddenly melted as he said: "Are you okay? You drank so much last night while I didn't pay attention. I will send you home?"

When Jiang Xuening heard the word ‘I will’ of his, she couldn't help remembering her previous life: After Yan Lin returned to the court, he casted himself to Xie Wei, and together with Xie Wei, they turned Shen Jie into a mere figurehead only. Soon after, Shen Jie was poisoned.

In her previous life, she felt that it was probably done by Xie Wei.

But now she feels that it may not be the case and it might be Yan Lin who did it instead.

When she was young, she regarded this kind of intention as ordinary. Now when she is reborn and comes back, she only finds how valuable it is.

The teenager treats people with absolute sincerity, and was even not so good at concealing it. If he likes it, he has to protect and keep it by his side. If he cares about it, he has to show it. He even anxiously wants to hold it in his hands all the time.

It's a pity that she doesn't deserve such love.

Jiang Xuening looked at him in a daze and forgot to speak for a moment.

Shen Jie felt that the situation is a bit subtle, and suddenly said: "Today, Teacher Xie is going to make a speech at the opening of Wenhua[1] hall, and we are going to attend it too. It’s this time already. Yan Lin, shouldn't you come into the palace with me? "

Jiang Xuening reacted at this moment.

She naturally has to return to the mansion.

But after suddenly being reborn again, her mind was in a mess. It still needs to be sorted out, but she didn't want to be sent back to the mansion by Yan Lin., so she said: "The things in the palace naturally can't be delayed. Yan Lin, I also want to go back by myself today."

At that time, she was notoriously known for having the temperament of being too spoiled.

Half of it was because her father, Assistant Minister Jiang, was ashamed and didn't dare to control this daughter of his who he took back to the capital too much. The other half was because of being spoiled by Yan Lin.

So her wanting to go back by herself actually didn't need any reason.

Sure enough, Yan Lin really didn't ask why. It seemed that he had long been used to her willfulness and indulgence. Anyway, it was the Ning Ning that he put on the tip of his heart, so he only said, "Then I will call Qing Feng to follow you from far away."

Qing Feng is one of his two personal attendants.

Although Jiang Xuening wanted to reject it, when she looked at his expression, she knew it is better to put the idea down for the time being, and only nodded her head obediently.

The more Shen Jie looked at it, the more he felt that there was something wrong with the two of them.

He is a good-tempered person by nature and it was not easy to get him angry.

In all fairness, his appearance is also excellent.

Especially when he smiled, when both of his eyes were slightly curved, it was so elegant and gentle like a piece of fine jade.

In those years after Jiang Xuening married him, they had never quarreled even once.

ALT chapter 2.1 Yan Lin

       She is reborn.

To the eighteen and a half years old’ her.

But neither at the beginning of everything, nor after everything had completely happened.

When she returned to the capital at the age of fourteen, she began to disguise herself as a man. She pretended to be the Biao[2] Young Master of Assistant Minister Jiang's family in the capital, and followed Yan Lin to wildly play in the capital. In September when she was eighteen, she was summoned to the palace to accompany Princess Le Yang as a study companion. In November of the same year, something happened to the Yongyi Marquis Mansion.

Jiang Xuening dazedly remembered that in the period of her true youth, Yan Lin was always there.

She is not afraid of anything if there is Yan Lin.

He was born in the family of a General. He had been in the frontier fortress for a period of time. He had the high spirit that most men in the capital didn't have. Dressed in fine clothes and rode on well-groomed horses, walking with a sword, always around her, loving her, protecting her.

If there is no accident, he should be marrying her and bringing her to his house.

Only, in this year when she followed Yan Lin, she unexpectedly ran into the King of Linzi, Shen Jie, who came to find Yan Lin.

At that time, she did not know Shen Jie’s identity yet.

But when Yan Lin saw this gentle and elegant, splendidly clothed young man, the first sentence he blurted out was: "Why did you[1] come out?"

       What is Yan Lin's identity?

The Shizi of the Yongyi Marquis Mansion, which is comparable to the Xiao clan, was personally appointed by the Emperor since long ago and he is very popular in the palace. Wherever he goes, others will respectfully call him with the honorable ‘Young Marquis’ title.

There are not many people who can make him use the word ‘you’.

Jiang Xuening, who always wanted to be the Empress in her previous life, secretly thought about it. After a careful inquiry, she indeed found out that Shen Jie was actually the King of Linzi. It was rumored in the capital that the Emperor had no son and wanted to establish Shen Jie as the Emperor’s (eldest) younger brother.

So the originally unintentional contact, turned into an intentional approach.

Later, something happened with the Yongyi Marquis Mansion, and she married Shen Jie as she wished.

Within two years, the Emperor died of illness and passed the throne to Shen Jie, and she also became the Empress.

However, although Shen Jie grew up in the palace since he was a child, he was different from his other brothers. He was too kind-hearted that he is irresolute and hesitant. He was too gentle that he behaved cowardly. Although he had the means, he couldn't bear to use it on others, so he couldn't even hold down the civil and military officials. He always needed the newly appointed Crown Prince’s Grand Tutor, Xie Wei, to deal with it for him, to encircle him.

In the end, he was poisoned to death.

Jiang Xuening had been put under confinement by Yan Lin at that time, and she could not even see him for the last time.

People who are too kind cannot be the Emperor.

This is the only enlightenment that Jiang Xuening could get from Shen Jie's tragedy in her previous life.

Now, she happened to be reborn just shortly after she met Shen Jie. Fortunately, she was not too deeply involved with him yet.

In this life, she does not want to enter the palace again.

  Kunning Palace is her tomb.

The simply furnished room is elegant.

In the cool air of early autumn, still floated with it the scent of wine from last night that has become lighter.

Outside the closed window, there was a faint noise from the market in the distance.

Yan Lin was still holding a sword in his hand. Although he has the stature of a teenager, the clear curve of his back could already be seen. When he pursed the corners of his mouth and didn't have a smile on his face, it was quite impressive.

He didn’t pay attention to Shen Jie temporarily.

He only turned his head back, without being able to get rid of the coldness between the corners of his eyes and the tips of his eyebrows, and asked in a cold voice: "Which hand did he touch you with?"

Jiang Xuening finally recovered from the trance when she suddenly realized her rebirth. The teenager's eyes that were as bright as the morning star were close to her. They were not yet filled with the suffering when the whole Yan clan had met with catastrophe, nor were they corroded by the darkness of the court's fierce fighting.

       Clean, bright and dazzling.

It's like the scorching sun hanging in the sky.

       Just, this question…

He is taking the posture of ‘when she answers it, he is going to chop off Shen Jie's paws’.

[1] This ‘you’ is the one with honorifics. There are two ‘you’ in Chinese. A normal one 你 (Nǐ) and respected one 您 (Nín). Try using google translate to listen to the pronunciation if you are curious.

[2] Biao : the relationship between the children or grandchildren of a brother and a sister or of sisters.

ALT chapter 1.4 A sunny day covered by snow

The exquisite golden Buyao smashed to the ground, and the deep ruby inlaid on it’s top broke and splashed out. The warm blood, slowly soaked along the steps on the cold ground, like the shallow stream that she used to play with barefoot when she was young.

The mistake of entering the palace wall, spinning a cocoon of prosperity.

This Kunning Palace eventually became a tomb where her bones are swallowed and her life is buried.

Out of the window, the sunny sun comes out and shines on the snow. Little by little, it slowly melt to the end…

  *

What a long dream. In the dream, the cause and effect of the first life are all chaotic. Only the feeling when the blade passes the neck is extremely clear.

       Really painful.

Jiang Xuening thought, if she knew it, she would choose a painless way to die.

       "Cough."

In the dream, it seemed that something was pressing on her chest that made her breathless, so she coughed and finally opened her eyes laboriously.

However, what she saw frightened her.

She was lying on a messy bed, or more precisely, between two men. Close at hand, is a handsome and elegant young man's face. His breath almost intertwined with her breath. He even raised a hand to embrace her carelessly.

Jiang Xuening's head was blown up at once.

This scene has to let her remember the time when Yan Lin had just come back from the court and put her under confinement, he always quietly stepped into her palace and made her didn’t have a good sleep…

She threw the man's hand away at once, turned over and got up from the bed.

The young man opened his eyes from his drunken dream, and was surprised at her behavior. He just sat up halfway and stretched out his hand to pull her: "Umm, Brother Jiang, let’s continue to sleep——"

       "Presumptuous!"

At least she was once an Empress and even commanded hundreds of officials. Jiang Xuening heard his rude remarks and also saw his unrestrained behavior, and she slapped him in the face completely subconsciously!

       “Pa!”

This sound was so loud that it finally startled the teenager in dark robe who was sleeping soundly with a sword on the other side of the soft bed.

He opened his eyes. He has long eyebrows, a straight nose and thin lips, and was enveloped with his own dashing spirits all over. When he saw this scene, he was at a loss for a moment, but then he caught a glimpse of the messy robes of the splendidly clothed young man, the five reddish finger marks on his right cheek, and Jiang Xuening's surprised and angry face.

As if there’s a crashing sound in his mind, the teenager’s senses returned and he instantly stepped forward to block in front of Jiang Xuening’s body, drew his sword out of its sheath, and pressed the tip of the sword against the young man's neck!

Frost covered the facial features that still have some greenness left on it.

He asked with a cold voice: "What did you do to her?!"

On one hand, the young man was surprised that he was so impulsive that he even dared to draw a sword at himself. On the other hand, he was aggrieved and innocent. He couldn't help covering his cheek: "What can I do? This King is not a cut-sleeve[1]!"

The teenager furrowed his brows and his eyes were looking at him suspiciously.

       This King…

       Jiang Xuening suddenly froze.

Only then did she realize that her whole body was full of alcohol’s smell and found that she was wearing a green robe embroidered with silver thread and bamboo pattern. She was dressed up as a teenage boy. There was also a burning pain on the palm of her hand from when she slapped the person just now.

She was disguising herself as a man.

She is not inside the dream.

The face of the young man being pointed at by the sword, and the figure of the teenage boy standing in front of her, finally emerge from her memory gradually. One was her future husband, the Emperor of the world, now still the King of Linzi[2], Shen Jie. The other was the Shizi[3] from the Marquis Mansion, Yan Lin, who later rebelled and put her under confinement in the deep palace...

[1] cut-sleeve : err, guy liking guy…

[2] Linzi : haven’t found a translation for this one. It’s a district’s name when I googled it.

[3] Shizi : the eldest heir (usually eldest son from the legal wife) that was going to inherit the family’s title.

ALT Chapter 3.2 Return Home

There has been no prince in the palace for a long time, so it is not necessary to give lectures to the prince. Instead, he gave lecture...
